Anthony Morris

The Vivian is delighted to formally represent the renowned senior New Zealand potter and artist, Anthony Morris. A leading figure in the history of New Zealand pottery, Anthony is still based in Matakana – the village which The Vivian also calls home.

Anthony (Ant) established the well-loved pottery, Morris and James, with his wife Sue James in 1977. Yet even after five decades of continual making, he still shies away from the word ‘artist’, preferring instead to use the word ‘potter’ (despite many friendly arguments with Director of The Vivian, Scott Lawrie).

Ant’s work spans multiple bodies of work, occasionally raw, often sublime, but always demonstrating outstanding technical excellence. His work has often been influenced by his international travels, and shaped by his experience of working around the world.

His private collection of works – available for sale for the first time this year – offers a limited and rare chance to own an outstanding piece of New Zealand cultural history.

To celebrate his 80th year, The Vivian will host a major solo show of the private work of Anthony Morris, from 8 September to 14 October, 2018.
